SASSA status check: R350 and R370 payments, photos and appeals

Waiting on an SRD payment is its own kind of stress. One page says approved, an SMS says something else, and the money still is not in your account. The checker above shows you how the process works and what a result looks like. For an official answer, use one of the four channels below.

Four ways to check your SASSA status

1. Moya app

Moya is free and runs on data or Wi-Fi. Open the app, tap the SASSA icon, choose the status check, then type your ID number and the phone number you used when you applied. The answer comes back in seconds. No airtime needed.

2. WhatsApp

Save 082 046 8553 to your contacts, open a chat with it, and send the word STATUS. The bot asks for your ID and phone number and replies within a minute or two. It uses a small amount of WhatsApp data.

3. USSD

Dial *134*7737# and follow the menu. This one works with no data at all, which is why it is still the go-to when you are out of airtime. The menu is slow and cramped on old phones, but it gets the job done.

4. Phone call

Call 0800 60 10 11 free of charge. Choose the R350/R370 option, enter your ID when asked, and the status is read out to you. If you need to speak to a person, this is the only channel that gives you one. Expect long queues early in the month.

Small tip: the first two days of the month are chaos. Everyone checks at once and the system crawls. Try late afternoon or the next day and you will get through much faster.

SRD R370 photos and the facial check

If you applied for SRD R370 you have probably been asked for a photo or a facial scan. The reason is simple: people were applying on other people's ID numbers. The scan confirms that the face in front of the camera belongs to the person on the ID. Once you pass it, you normally do not have to do it again for the life of that grant.

How to take a photo that gets accepted

  • Daylight helps. Face a window. Avoid a lamp directly behind you or a hard shadow across your face.
  • Look straight at the lens. No tilting, no side angles, whole face in the frame.
  • Take off glasses and hats. Glare from lenses throws the check off.
  • Use a plain wall. A busy background confuses the software.
  • Photographing your ID? Lay it flat, shoot from straight above, and make sure there is no shine on the plastic.

Rejected once or twice? That is normal. Check the lighting and try again. If it keeps failing, take your ID and phone to a SASSA office and ask them to verify you in person.

SASSA payment dates

Dates move slightly from month to month, and public holidays push them around. This is the usual pattern:

GrantWhen it is normally paid
SRD R350 / R370First week of the month, usually by the 5th
Child Support GrantFirst week, often on the 1st
Older Persons GrantSecond week, from around the 10th
Disability GrantSecond week, same as older persons

How the money reaches you

  • Bank transfer — straight into your account. Fastest option if you have a valid SA bank account.
  • Cash send — a voucher code arrives by SMS. Withdraw at any ATM or till that supports it.
  • Retail collection — draw cash at Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers or a Postbank branch with your ID and the voucher.

Keep the voucher to yourself. Anyone with the code can take the money.

What your status message actually means

Approved

You qualify and payment is on the way for that month. Bank transfers show up a couple of days after the payment date.

Bank details pending

SASSA approved you but has nowhere to send the money. Log in and capture your account number and branch code. One wrong digit and the payment bounces back.

Period pending

Nothing is wrong. The month you are checking is still being processed. Wait a few days and look again.

Means test failed

SASSA decided your income or assets are over the limit. If that is wrong, appeal it. The appeal route is below.

Identity verification failed

Usually the photo or the ID number itself. Retype the ID carefully and upload a clearer, brighter photo.

Do not just leave it. A pending status that sits for weeks usually means something is missing on your side. Fix the detail, upload a better photo, or phone the helpline. People lose months of payments by waiting.

If you were declined, appeal it

Appeals go to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals, not to SASSA itself, so you get a fresh look at your case.

  1. Open the ITSAA website at itsaa.gov.za.
  2. Click Appeal and open the form.
  3. Enter your ID number and the reference number from your decline letter.
  4. Explain in plain words why you think the decision is wrong.
  5. Attach anything that backs you up, like proof of income or an affidavit.
  6. Submit and wait. Two to four weeks is normal.

Win the appeal and you get back pay for the months you should have been paid. The most common wins come from a wrong income assessment, missing paperwork that is now supplied, or a plain system error.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check my status without airtime?

Yes. Dial *134*7737#. USSD is free and needs no data.

What is the difference between R350 and R370?

R370 is the newer amount. It is the same grant with a higher value, and the application process has not changed.

Why does my status keep saying pending?

It means that month is still being processed. If it stays that way past two weeks, phone 0800 60 10 11.

Can I change my phone number online?

No. Contact details are updated in person at a SASSA office with your ID.

My photo keeps getting rejected. What now?

Try again in daylight, facing the camera, against a plain wall. Still failing? Go to a SASSA office.

Do I get back pay for months I missed?

Yes, if your appeal succeeds or SASSA made the error. The arrears are paid with the next run.

Where can I collect cash?

Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Checkers and Postbank branches. Take your ID and the voucher SMS.

How long does an appeal take?

Around two to four weeks. You get a notification when the tribunal has decided.

Is this site run by SASSA?

No. It is an independent information page and the checker is a demo.

What does means test failed mean?

SASSA thinks your income or assets are above the limit. You can appeal if you disagree.
